Every week, I talk to dozens of women who come into Sugar Spa for their hair removal services. Some conversations are deep and meaningful, some are inspirational, some are so funny I get tears in my eyes, and some are heart breaking. You never know what burdens someone else is carrying.

Other conversations make me sad at the pressure society puts on women. It seems we’re never enough as we are, and I call bullshit. To everyone breathing a sigh of relief at the cooler temperatures so they can once again hide themselves under various layers, here are some lessons I’ve learned throughout my life that may help you feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin…

Self-Awareness

Authenticity is key. Don’t try to fit into someone else’s box about who you should be, what you should do, or how you should behave. Figure out what you need, what makes you happy, and live that life unapologetically.

Self-Acceptance

When you’re constantly surrounded by images of unrealistic ideals of the “perfect body” it can be challenging to be comfortable in your skin. The truth is, the concept of beauty evolves over time and varies from culture to culture. Rather than trying to fit a certain look, learn to appreciate the body you have. I promise you… you’re beautiful just the way you are!

Self-Love

Stop being so hard on yourself. Whether you messed up at work, did or said something embarrassing in public, or forgot a friend’s birthday, try to own it, let it go, and move on. Everyone is allowed to make mistakes. Also, break the cycle of negative thoughts and self-talk. The kinder you are to yourself, the better you will feel.

Self-Care

Women often put themselves last because they’re so busy taking care of others. Making time for a cut and style, getting your nails done, working out, or scheduling hair removal is a way to recharge and invest in yourself.

No one, not your parent, sibling, friend, or significant other should make you feel bad about yourself. People who put you down, or those who are constantly negative, aren’t worth your time. You deserve a genuine support system of caring people who are sincerely rooting for you.

Practice Gratitude

Theodore Roosevelt said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” There will always be people who have more than you, and there will always be people who have less. Appreciating what you have is a valuable life skill that can directly contribute to feeling happier and more content.

 

In summary, you are worthy. You ARE enough. Put these lessons into practice and see how much better you feel about yourself!
